Classical screenplay structure is about visceral emotional cleansing. But some stories are about something much bigger than simply the catharsis of a main character. These kinds of films are ‘epic’ and they’re as much about the fictional people within the frame as they are about us the audience.
These kinds of films need us to carry them outside the theater to make sense of. They require our help as viewers and more importantly as feeling, thinking human beings, to determine its meaning and theme, if there is one to be found.
